Morningstar, Inc., a leader provider of independent investment insights, today announced its updated methodology for the Morningstar Awards for Investing Excellence in 24 markets globally.
The awards will take place in March and April 2024 across 24 markets, including Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK in Europe; Chile and Mexico in the Americas; and Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand in Asia; and South Africa.
The Morningstar Awards for Investing Excellence program is designed to recognise funds and asset managers that have not only delivered strong risk-adjusted returns in the past year but have also served investors well over the longer term and should continue to so going forward. These awards are selected using a combination of past performance and risk and, whenever possible, Morningstar’s forward-looking rating for funds, the Morningstar Medalist Rating™, including its Parent pillar component. The full methodology for the awards and its application for each market is available here.
Under the methodology, there are three types of Morningstar awards: the Morningstar Category Awards, the Morningstar Asset Manager Awards, and the Morningstar Asset Manager – Sustainable Investing Awards.
“The Morningstar Awards for Investing Excellence are designed to recognise the industry’s best fund offerings and investor-centric firms. We emphasise our analysts’ qualitative, forward-looking views during the selection process across individual fund markets. With our new methodology being used across 24 markets globally, we look forward to rolling out these research-driven awards to new markets for the first time in 2024,” said Wing Chan, Morningstar’s head of manager research, Europe and Asia Pacific.
Morningstar has granted annual awards to accomplished portfolio managers since 1988. The Morningstar Awards for Investing Excellence winners are chosen based on research and in-depth qualitative evaluation by Morningstar’s manager research group. These awards are determined by a combination of risk-adjusted medium- to long-term performance track records and Morningstar’s forward-looking rating for funds, the Morningstar Medalist Rating™ including its Parent pillar component. The Medalist Rating is set on a five-tier scale running from Gold, Silver, Bronze, Neutral and Negative at the share class level. The Morningstar Asset Manager – Sustainable Investing Awards are determined by a combination of Morningstar’s qualitative and quantitative sustainability research capabilities.
